Little egret

The Port of Traiano is a wintering area of numerous aquatic birds, above all ducks. In this season there are large numbers, even hundreds of mallards, pochards, teals and shovelers. The many channels that cross the site are frequented by an abundance of cormorants, grey herons and a little egrets. You can see nearly all species of the european grebe in particular the little grebe, the great crested grebe and the black-necked grebe.

During the migratory period you can observe black terns, white-winged black terns, black headed gulls and numerous bird of prey including the kestrel, the buzzard and the black kite which visits the basin regularly in the summer months looking for floundering or dying fish.
 

Blackbirds, blackcaps and sardinian warblers gather in the bushy undergrowth along with the great tits and nuthatchs together they form noisy, colourful roving bands in search of food. As always during the winter months the robin is everywhere and the little owl, the tawny owl and the barn owl fly the night skies. The nutria (Myocastor coipus), the least weasel (Mustela nivalis) and foxes are among same of the mammals found in the area whereas the common toad (Bufo bufo) and green frog make-up the amphibian life and from the reptilian family there is the grass snake (Natrix natrix), the wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), the green lizard and with a little luck the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis).
